Dear section,

It's been a week after passing down. I'm sorry this is so late and random. It's been a hectic week.

I'm very very sorry for not being able to complete all your letters.Have been catching up with my school work recently.Will definitely pass you all your letters after BT2.

I'm really really sorry. Will bring along candy or sth when i go back to visit.

Thank you for being such a wonderful and adorable section. Each one of you have played a part in making my last year with nycb the unique, enriching and memorable one it had been. Thank you for working with me in the past year, giving me attention and support every sectionals as well as putting in your utmost effort to prepare for SYF,Open House, FOA etc.

I remember when we first started off, we were lost, unsure and afraid. But we've come a long way on the way to SYF esp. We never would have believed in that gold at the start of our journey, we met with difficulties, kept stagnating and we thought we'd never be able to play up to expectations. But in the end though it wasn't perfect it was the best i thought we ever played and i knew it was worth our months of gruelling and painful practice. We played from our hearts, to our 300%. The short 10 mins on stage would stay with me forever and I would give anything to just experience that. So we didn't get what we wanted, but that only means we have a lot more to improve on and work towards for the next. So Sec2s and 1s, it's all up to you to prove nycb is worth way more.Work hard and keep this goal in mind. FOA was simply magical and i know that we all played our hearts out that night. It was batch'11s last concert/performance with nycb and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Thank you for the beautiful, beautiful night.

We've had good times and bad times. I hope in the course of this year we've all matured and improved as players and in a strange, subtle way bonded through playing together. I'm sorry i hadn't taken the effort to bond with the section as I was concerned with our playing as well as ensuring some discipline in the section. (I'm not a disciplinarian in nature, so i hoped distancing myself could work.) As much as I regret not having known you guys better personally, I hope that in our brief interactions and encounters, I have managed to help you improve as a player as well as conveyed the right messages and encouragement. I might not have chatted with you much/ told you off all the time, but it was not out of dislike and strange personal reasons. 打是疼、骂是爱 know? In all our times together, i've realised as much as you guys can be rowdy and unattentive sometimes, you are a really likeable and cute bunch.

Sec2s used to be like these strange little people but now having known you better, i realised Kanghui can be sweet in a strangely sarcastic way, Lesley can be very mature, Mingying can be um idk painfully funny and Ashley can be pretty helpful and polite yes. You guys are now the seniors, so leave the immaturity and nonsense behind and be good seniors and examples for the juniors. Support your seniors as well and pay attention to them, help them along.

As for Sec3s, the ridiculously crazy Jo and Cherie have been very initiative to help out with buddying and the section shelf , Nicole also went kuku less this year, Xin Yun has been the only bass whenever Chia wasnt around so 辛苦你了(hope it has been good training to prepare you), ChinShian has been very nice and polite always listening attentively and trying her very best,and lastly Yinan, who has been the constant source of joy and entertainment for our section, never failing to make the atmosphere all happy and joyful. Thank you Sec3s. You guys have now taken over our duties and i believe in you so dont disappoint me kay?Work together and support one another. Lead our section and guide the juniors well. Yes and mature soon.

Sec1s, I havent had the chance to interact much with you exp for Xin Juan. Xin Juan thank you for always being so sweet, polite and obedient, it's been a pleasure having you in our section.

FangYi and Jia yi, I've seen more of you guys. Thank you for being punctual, hardworking and always turning up for events. Anna, Yilin and Carlen, haven't interacted much with you guys but I can tell that you have been hardworking as well, turning up for lunch pracs etc. Thank you Sec1s also for helping out diligently with all the logistics(saikang warriors!) everytime we need help e.g. SYF to hold our belongings, FOA to set up chairs without complains. I hope you keep in mind the things i've gone through with you and continue to work on your basics. Continue to prac very very hard and listen to the seniors, i believe you all have the potential to become very good players so jia you.

Went back to band for sectionals, mainband sat around and stuff. I'm glad to see that everyone has moved on smoothly and the seniors are supporting one another so good job.Sec1s in mainband now? Jia you and hope you guys get used to it soon! I really miss being there with you guys among squeaks, runs and Yinan's funny random laughter.

If only you could see my heart, it now has this giant empty hole in it. :(

Work hard and make clarinets even more awesome than it is now kay?

I regret not being able to have more time with you guys but I promise to visit whenever i can and bring food too. Here is a smiley :D which i have deprived you all of in all my smses.

Hey Section.

Band resumes on the 10th June, Friday.

Band Outing has been pushed back to the 17th June, Friday.Its going to be at Pasir Ris Park,consent forms will be given out at a later date.
Please text me if you are unable to make it, valid reason is required.

The holiday practice schedule is below.

Sec1s please follow schedule for tues and thurs, but come for section bonding on fri only at 12pm.Bring your notebooks.

Main band people:

Those who have your scores for section piece and heart and voice please practice them. By fri i expect you to be familiar with your music, no more sight reading.
For those without scores, you'll get them on friday so please prac hard. We'll be perfoming soon when school reopens so be ready.
Please look through your music and make sure you at least prac once every week even if you're busy because you will forget and lose your embrouchure.
We'll be playing FLIGHT&FLYER again for the FOA concert so please look through that as well.

Please bring tuners on Friday. You have this week to get your batteries if you dont have working ones.

Hello Clarinets!

The main point of this post is to inform all of you that THERE WILL BE A SECTION CHALET DURING JUNE! EHEHEHE IS THAT NOT EXCITING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!! I FEEL EXCITED JUST FROM TYPING THAT!

Uh moving on, I need to know the dates on which you guys are free during june so that I can find a time when MOST of us are available. Hopefully, all of us. So, please text me ASAP the days you are NOT AVAILABLE for the section chalet. It would probably be 2D1N or 3D2N. I'm currently finding a huuuuge bungalow chalet because ~6 batches of clarinets would be coming (:

In conclusion, please text me your dates as soon as you see this BECAUSE I HAVE TO BOOK THE CHALET AS ODD KIASU SINGAPOREANS BOOK THEIR CHALETS YEARS IN ADVANCE SO WE HAVE TO SNATCH THE LAST ROOMS/HOUSES BEFORE THEY ARE FULLY BOOKED! I really hope we get a good chalet though. If we cant, some kind soul can open their house to us hahaha or we can go camping by the beach(which I actually think would be a failure because no one wants to experience obs living again)!

How are you guys feeling now? I'd like to say that I'm proud of all of you and i know we all tried our best. Personally, I felt I left the stage with no regrets as I know it was our 300%, I felt it. Thank you so much for being with me, supporting me through our journey. I wouldnt have been able to get through this without you.

I know we all are disappointed, but dont let this hold you back or break you. Stay strong, for this is not the end .What's happened has happened, there's no point in burrowing yourself into it. All this means is that we have room for improvement and we will keep trying to make ourselves even better. So from now onwards, start thinking forwards, think of how you can improve yourself, give yourself a new goal to achieve and make sure you achieve it. I thought crescent's clarinets were really good, so that's my goal/challenge for all of us kay? For the rest of this year, let's work towards that tone and power as well as preparing the juniors for the next time.

Lastly,I'd like to say that Ms Chong has done and sacrificed so much for us, so really learn to appreciate her. We are very fortunate to have such a caring and dedicated conductor who's always so caring and encouraging and never once gave up on us. So please really treasure every band prac with her, always give your very very best for her because i know she does the same for us.

That's all i guess.

Didn't have the opportunity to speak to you all the other day. Anyway, all I want to say is, we've come thus far, and we'll not allow ourselves to let ourselves down tomorrow. It's just a few hours away from the time when we take the stage to speak to the audience, to express ourselves, not through words, but our music. Music is a universal language and it's the medium through which we will be telling everyone out there that "We are NYCB and this is what we are worth". We are not going to prove anyone right; neither are we going to prove anyone wrong. Tomorrow is the time for us to prove ourselves. We have no other rivals except ourselves.
“台下十年功，台上十分钟” Like what was mentioned earlier on, no matter how hard we've worked throughout this period of time, please, treasure every moment you have on stage, be claer of our goal and give nothing but your very best tomorrow. Don't let all your efforts go down the drain. Give nothing but your very best, and no matter what the result is eventually, there is nothing to regret. because I want everyone to leave the stage tomorrow knowing that they have all given their personal 300%. - Be VERY FOCUSED tomorrow. WATCH and do not leave your eyes off the conductor at all costs. (This may sound funny, but really, stick to it) - REMEMBER everything that the conductors had told you and play accordingly. don't be too anxious and forget everything that you are supposed to do. It hasn't been an easy journey, I must say. I hereby urge everyone to give our very best tomorrow and make SYF 2011 a memorable experience that will stay with you for life.

sorry for not going for section breakfast/ prac today! couldn't drag myself off the bed this morning so so very sorry ):

anyways, 1 day to SYF! though I haven't heard y'all in a very long time, I know all of you have been putting in alot of effort for the past few days, weeks and months. 11th April will be the day you show everyone what NYCB is made of - sincerity and passion, and that warm fuzzy feeling :) so don't be afraid, don't be afraid to play because it's the final performance. don't be too stiff, because the judges will know. enjoy yourself, for music is a wordless language; enjoy what you play, and the judges will enjoy what they hear (& we'll enjoy what they announce :D)

2 years ago, NYCB gave her all on stage at SCH. though we didn't attain the honours we wished we had, the process, the hours of prac, the time together on stage, that warm fuzzy feeling when playing the set and choice pieces, was definitely more than I could ask for. so I just wanted to say, treasure this performance together, for it's really an unforgettable experience. walk onto the stage with confidence, do your best, and leave SCH with your heads held high (:

Today's our last prac before monday. In just 2 days we'd be on the stage for that crucial 10min we have been working so hard for. There is no prac tmr but still do keep your mind clear and focused and if possible go listen the recordings(links are below) and think through your piece. Think about all the things we've corrected and things to note such as parts where intonation is weak, dynamics(be soft where you need to,mp MUST be mp dont overblow,really really stick to your corrections and markings on your scores) and syncopated rhythms(flight bar 152 etc).Make sure also that your posture while playing should be upright,neat and smart all the time, 1/3 out of chair.
If you brought instru home, do try to prac a little so you dont lose touch.Here are some parts to go through(take these instructions down on your scores):

1) Tune your instrument. Get your tuner and sit down to tune all your notes from the lowest E to your high register key C. Make adjustments(barrel or embrouchure) until every note is accurate as soon as you play it. If certain notes tend to be off tune take down the necessary adjustments(bite more, loosen grip, faster air etc) you need for that note to be in tune and stick to the adjustment always.

2) Flyer figure A: note your notes from high C-A, make sure as you articulate it stays in tune. Control volume as you play. Tune pick up note G and make sure it is full. The G was airy during today's prac. Flyer figure F: 3rds focus your air into the instrument(remove the airy tone) and support tasha more, she's playing very hard so please focus your tone so she doesnt need to overblow. Flyer beginning and ending runs: make sure the last F is in tune and full as well, ppl tend to blast there so practice slowly.although it is a short run but please make sure ALL your notes come out nicely.( listen to the recording), please please also stick very very close to the flutes.

3) Flight:tune long notes after runs, keep volume down dont blast. Slow parts play sweetly and lightly(not soft volume/air, but less force/tongue on the notes), full tone as well, really focus your air. In all, intonation(tuning) is our main weakness so please make sure you really diligently check it before monday. We've been through so many pracs together, done so many corrections so please stick to them and remember them when you play on monday. Listen very closely to the band and blend in, make sure you dont stick out, listen esp to the flutes in the runs and other similar passages.

It's our last lap now. so jia you clarinets, we will together do ourselves, our seniors and ms chong proud kay? I'd like to thank you all for working along with me and being such a tolerant and supportive section. We are soon reaching our destination, i hope that you have learnt and gained new experiences along the way. I'm very proud of how many of us have worked hard and improved since the start of our preparations, so let's not let ourselves and all our time and efforts go to waste and make the most of our 10 minutes on stage, give our best and even more. All the best and i love you all. Stay focused and I'll see you all on monday.

above is the letter Tabby wrote to us the day she came back to visit, i've uploaded it so you can all read it. I'm sure you've seen beishi and sherlyn's posts as well. I'd like to thank all seniors for your kind words of encouragement. Please read them if you haven't.

As we all know syf is only days away. We're only this bit from that moment we step into the hall and show the world what we have prepared for them. So really really, i urge you, do this for yourself. Treasure this coming week before the 11th. Don't leave the stage with regret.

You've been working hard, there's no room for looking back and regretting. Just show the judges what you've been working hard on for the months leading up to the 11th. Recall all the things we've been through during sectionals,during main band, during your own practices and feel confident because you have improved and you are equipped with them.

They are your experiences, your supplies that you'll be carrying into the, um, battlefield.

From this moment onwards, stop thinking about what you haven't done, but focus on what you have worked on, improve on it.

Ultimately,always remember, we are a team.We are one team, nycb. So when you are playing remember you have another 79 people with you.Learn to support and accommodate one another, find the other 79 souls around you as you play, connect with them,speak to them.It's only when this connection happens, your music is alive. I cant tell you how, you'll have to try and find it yourself. Even when you are not playing at the moment, still feel the other lines in the music and find where you come in and how you fit in it.

We are a team.We rely on one another so don't let your friends down, make sure you know there are people who really want this and really worked hard, so make sure you work as hard too.

Friday's prac was slightly better, i can feel more tension, more emotion in our playing so do keep it up. All the best in the upcoming week.We MUST only improve and grow with each coming prac.

Some housekeeping matters:

1)Tuners- please get batteries BY TUESDAY and bring your tuners to every prac. You buy tuners for a reason so use them. Pencils are to be brought to each prac as well( this is not new.)

2) Black Paper booklet for scores are to be done by next week. I'll check them.

3) Make sure you have your full uniform w/ socks and shoes(excluding skirt). Those absent last week, please collect from Cheryl Ho this week. Those who haven't brought scarves, BRING ON TUES.

4)Below is the seating and stand arrangements for the syf please note where you're sitting and your stand partners. Each stand must have one booklet prepared. Total of 8 stands.

5) Take care of yourselves, drink lots of water, eat vitamins and watch your diet, eat healthily.We can section binge on snacks and whatnot afterwards yea?Keep yourself healthy and safe, don't injure yourself and just take care. Keep focussed.Don't get over excited and exert yourselves too much( I know sec2 blocks ended.). Be your 300% mentally and physically for the whole of next week and on Monday.

Hello clarinets! Your SYF is in one week right!

Two years ago NYCB played our hearts out at SYF and although we didn't get what we think we deserved, we really enjoyed ourselves and I think the experience and the journey of preparing for this competition is all that matters.

Just go to SCH and try your best. I am sure the judges (with their wonderful godlike ears) can hear every bit of your hard work and passion for music. I was there at your sound check, you all were good and I think you guys have progressed even more right now! So don't worry, just remember on that day itself, remind yourself why you are doing this: You're here to show the audience that NYCB is a really good band full of passionate members that play music not for marks but for the beauty of music itself.

But since SYF IS a competition, do be aware of the technicalities of the music. Just do your best, be focused and you will do fine. Let the judges decide your marks, don't let it bother you too much because if you try your best they will hear it too (:

So the following week is the most important week!

Take care of yourself, don't fall sick/injure yourself in any way.

Sleep early!

Be mentally prepared for SYF!

On SYF day remember everything mschong/mrgoh/your SLs taught you and DON'T PANIC.

Esther and Chiaying you are doing great, don't stress yourself out, remember no matter how anxious you are, you need to be there for the rest of the section so don't give up(:

Hello section. :D

Here's something interesting about the Piasa bird. I hope you guys could feel the same way as I did as you go through this short story; to relate the different parts of the story to the music that we are playing, and vice versa. And as you play this piece the next time, I hope you would remember the story and discover, by yourself, what the composer's intention of 'writing' each segment is and how the expression should be brought forth on your instrument. Okay here goes:

The following story appeared recently (1836) in the Alton Telegraph by John Russel. It is claimed that this is story told to Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet by the Indian tribes of the valley.

When Marquette and Joliet came down the Mississippi river in 1673 they encountered a bluff on the east side of the river with the painting of a giant monster. When they asked the Indians what this monster was, they retold for them the story that had been handed down to them for generations. Marquette named the monster "Piasa," pronounced Pie-a-saw, which means "the Destroyer."

The Legend of the Piasa bird that was related to Marquette and Joliet went something like this. Many years ago a great bird roamed the land. Every morning the people would wake in fear to the shrill screams of the great Bird. The bird awoke hungry and would carry off dozens of boys and girls to its cave to be eaten. Chief Ouatoga [OO-wa-toe-ga] was getting old. He wanted to destroy this terrible killer before he died. He called his braves to a meeting and told them he was going to ask the Great Spirit what to do.

He went up on the highest bluff. He spoke with the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit told the Chief, "Dip your arrows deep into the poison of a copperhead snake and shoot them into the body of the Bird. They will cause its death." He returned to the camp and told his people what the Great Spirit had told him. He gathered up a small army of the strongest braves and set out to hunt the Bird. Chief Ouatoga told his braves that the plan was for someone to stand on the cliff to lure the Bird down. When the great monster swoops down they were to shoot it with their poison arrows.

The braves all begged their chief to be the one to sacrifice themselves. But the chief told them no, he would be the one, since he was older. While the braves practiced with their bows, Chief Ouatoga spoke with the Great Spirit. "Think not of my life," he said, "but the lives of the children."

The next morning the chief stood tall waiting for the great bird to come. Its screams could be heard as flew down the river looking for victims. The bird saw the old chief and swooped down on him with a terrible scream.

Just as the monster was ready to attack the braves shot their arrows and all 100 met their mark. The monster fell into the Mississippi river and died. The braves carried the broken and bruised body of their chief back to the tribe. The medicine man healed him and he awoke the next day surrounded by his grateful people. In remembrance of the act the returned to the site and painted a life-size picture of the monster. Every time an Indian went down the river after that, he fired an arrow at the bluff. In alternate versions of the story the youngest brave stands on the cliff instead of the chief. When he is healed the next day he becomes the new chief.

Sec3s (with the exception of Rachelle)will be leaving for gcp and will not be with you guys for some time so in the mean time juniors do work hard and prepare well for the pieces. The upcoming auditions are important as it prepares you for main band and the SYFs, so take it seriously and really work hard towards it.Do approach Rachelle for any queries and if you need help.(han, all the best~)

Below are some things to note:

1. Sec ones Assessments
Assessments for National Anthem and School Songs will proceed as normal so Sec 1s do take note and prepare well for it. Do approach any of the seniors or mr goh if you need help. Seniors do try and help the juniors as well :)

2. Holiday Prac.
There will be band prac in the holidays for all levels so do take note of the schedule below. Confirmed date for band break & camp will be updated soon. We will also have a band exchange with St Margs band on 6th&7th Dec at their school. Do inform me if you cannot make it. Also, do inform me if you have any diet constraints such as food allergies or if you are vegetarian so we can keep track for the exchange and camp etc.

As chalet will require everyone to pay a considerable amount,

hey clarinets!

this is probably the last time I will be posting on this blog...

firstly, from the very bottom of my heart, thank you so, so much for the presents, and the letters! thank you so much for the thought & effort y'all have put into for our presents, I was really touched when I saw/ received them, and I really appreciate the thought :)
(hmm although it wasn't very wise to have given your letters to the sec2s! quite a few letters got mixed up haha...)

also, thank you for being such an awesome section for the past year. thank you for bearing my (as well as beishi's) gayness & spastic actions, thank you for being willing to put in that extra effort & thought for the clarinets section, for the band, and thank you for bringing so much laughter & joy into my life (:

to the sec3s: thank you chiayingestherjinnyrachelletashayujun for all the wonderful memories y'all have given me for the past three/ two years. (oh yes thank you for the product of operation badge!) as of today, you guys are the oldest peeps of the band. there won't be any seniors to rely on anymore; y'all are now the pillars of support that the juniors rely on. teach the juniors well, and enjoy the last precious year together in NYCB :)

to the sec2s: thank you cheriechinshianjosephinenicolexinyun for being such an entertaining batch of juniors, never failing to bring laughter into my life. but as seniors of the band, start to cut down on all the kuku-ness (directed especially towards the 3 kukus of our section), and start behaving like a senior, not a bunch of crazy kids shouting & screaming at the top of their voices almost everyday ;)

to the sec1s: thank you ashleykanghuilesleymingying, for being so patient & enduring throughout the entire year. although I didn't get the opportunity to spend much time with all of you, thank you for always being there, and treasure your time as a junior of NYCB! (:

my thoughts now are rather incoherent (can tell from this very incoherent post), but I just want to say, clarinets, thank you for everything. NYCB has been a really wonderful journey, and this journey would not have been complete without all of you.

M3-09, the clarinets section room, our squashed section area (we should get a new one!), the auto-switch off aircons in our section room, dripping air-con at our spot in the band room...

these are the many minute details of the small corner of level 3 of a building located on 2linden drive, but these are the things that I will always remember.

I will miss every single one of our big family very, very much. support your new SLs, & do your best for NYCB, for it is only when you put in effort that you will be able to feel the magic of this band. I believe you guys can do it! (:

we'll be back to visit! (and play other instruments for your listening pleasure).

hello my beloved section!!

in less than 24hours time, we'll be on the same stage we were on 2 months ago, showing the world who we are, where we come from (quote band cheer!) :)

ok important things first! allow me to nag for the very last time as your SL ~

1. Band Uniform

I know I was supposed to conduct uniform check today, but guess that it was too late by the time we packed up and everything. yup anyways, for those who have yet to place your band u in the band room, please die die remember to bring it tomorrow! or else I send you home to go and retrieve it.

FULL BAND U includes the following: blouse, vest, scarf, skirt, socks, shoes. make sure your shoes are in working condition & the soles won't drop off while you make your way onto stage.

for those who have yet to bring everything, GO PACK. NOWWWW.

2. Hair

SIBF is a competition, so hair should be SYF style - all fringe to be pinned up, extra hair flying about will be gelled up. yes I'm serious, we'll be using the Gatsby the sec3s bought from band outing :D everyone is to bring clips, bobbypins, even if you don't have fringe, to clip your hair up neatly. if you think clipping is a bad idea (i.e. fringe too short, too difficult to clip), please bring your own hairband to push your fringe back.

if anyone forgets to bring clips/ hairband, you risk the consequence of your hair being cut off. yes, thou shall bear the consequences of thou's actions!

(no lah actually can go down to pacific to buy, hopefully they have).

3. Scores

ALL originals, whether used or not, should be placed in the nice yellow Chipster file. please mark out those you'll be bringing onto stage. upon reaching RP, beishi, huizhen & chiaying, pls come take the scores from me for your parts. the remaining originals will be kept in the Chipster file, placed in the big bag, and passed to kanghui. so if you suddenly need an extra score, you know who to find!

and if you're worrying about your score flying due to the maybe quite strong air con in RP, or if you're afraid the score will fly off the stand when you flip, I suggest you can bring blue tack to stick the stand to the score. but pls stick the blue tack on the score before you go on stage!

pls also arrange how you'll be sharing the stands, and who is going to bring the score on stage. adjust stands/ chairs according to your current arrangement when on stage

4. Cleaning & Polishing of Instruments

please spend some time from 2 to 4.30 to clean your instrument. when I say clean, I mean:

- polishing of instrument

- washing of mouthpiece with SOAP

- cleaning all holes of the clarinet with cotton bud to remove any dirt.

yes so EVERYONE pls bring cotton bud tomorrow :)

5. On Stage

yes allow me to repeat myself ~

- sit straight, both legs flat on the ground, right leg infront of the left

- WATCH MS CHONG. especially pick up to 116 to before 124 for perseus, 2nds & 3rds tend to rush. most of you should have memorised your score now, so look up at ms chong! it's very nice to see eyes up from the audience, rather than seeing the eyes staring at the stand.

- play when you're supposed to, do not play when you're supposed to. please remember the parts that have been cut, and go straight to second ending for american beauties!!

- remember to take cap after performance. unlike concert, your cap can't be saved!

- please be alert on stage! don't blur blur kay!

yup I think that's about it. reiterate the list of things to bring so you don't have to refer back:

23 July 2010 marks the last official performance we have together. don't be sad that everything is going to end, be glad that it happened. be glad that we have SIBF to bring us together, to leave behind wonderful memories for us to reminisce. as they say, always leave the best for the last. tomorrow will be the very best, promise me all of you will do your very best for NYCB, for ms chong, for mr goh, for your seniors, and for your sec4s.

remember, watch ms chong. don't be afraid to play, cause I'm quite sure you'll only be able to hear yourself, the most the ppl next to you, on the stage in RP. play like how you've been playing, don't change anything, don't play louder cause you can only hear yourself. most importantly, enjoy yourself. enjoy the music you create, it's the first step you have to take before the audience can feel the same joy in the music you create. be emotional & passionate in PERSEUS, but let loose, go high (but follow all articulation/ dynamic you've been told!) and SWING during AMERICAN BEAUTIES. you've only got one chance to play the notes on the score, so make it the very, very best :)

to the main band players, remember to bring:

FULL BAND U! (vest, blouse, scarf, skirt, soccer socks, band shoes). forget any of this and I will hantam bolah you tmr
clarinet (if you brought it home). wash mouthpiece if you brought your instru home
ALL SCORES plucked out from the concert files
concert files if you brought it/them back
comb/tons of bobbypins/ clips/ hairband etc.
BROADWAY HATT. for those who are bringing it from your house, put it into a plastic container to protect it from wind/rain/sun/being squashed etc.etc. if yours gets squahsed in the midst of chaos tmr, I can't help you! oh and if your current hat is squashed, pls go redo another one! the dimensions of the cube itself is 4.5cm by 4.5cm, base is 8cm by 8cm.

to the junior band players/ recruits:

FULL BLACK OUTFIT (long sleeved black shirt, pants, socks & band shoes). forget any of this and I will hantam bolah you tmr too
SCORES to be brought onto stage. pls place the scores in a BLACK FILE. there should be 2 files per part.

SIT STRAIGHT!
both legs should be FLAT ON THE GROUND, right infront of the left as demonstrated on Saturday
remember to sit properlyyyy, especially the first row people
clarinet should only be lying on the lap during the third movement of Art in the Park, otherwise it should be standing on the lap (should only be in the position when there're more than 8bars of rest)/ in the going to play position.
clarinet should be in your mouth minimum minimum 2 bars before entrance
move quickly in between pieces. don't stone after ms chong/ mr goh has ended. oh and YOU SHOULDD KNOW YOUR PARTS BY NOWW. if you don't know...(stares), go memorise them now! (like how tasha did ahahaha). move according to the system set up on friday ok.
look up at ms chong/ mr goh whenever you can. COUNT PROPERLY, don't rush
be alert! stand when you're supposed to stand, sit when you're supposed to sit, do all other gimmicks when you're supposed to do them, don't lag! and smile when you're doing gimmicks! :DD
bring out articulation, dynamics when supposed to. don't ignore them! and note all other stuff mentioned previously by ms chong/ mr goh/ me/ beishi/ huizhen etc.etc.
rmb rmb rmb to projecttt! especially the low notes, but don't blast. and it's not necessary to project high notes, they have a mechanism for projecting themselves even if you don't want them to :)
remember to take your cap when moving in between pieces/ leaving the stage. I don't want more caps to go missing!
TRILLS AND ALL LONG NOTES (for main band upper clarients) SHOULD BE SOFT SOFT SOFT SOFT. I cannot emphasise how important this is! oh but it may change depending on the accoustics of the hall tmr, so please 随机应变 tmr
(hmm I'll add more tomorrow if I manage to think of more things :D )

(the nagging hasn't ended) drink loads of water, SLEEP EARLY TONIGHT (i'll be chasing people to go offline at 10PM SHARP), don't get too high before the concert or else you'll be x.x during the actual thing. which isn't very...good.

anyways, just to let you know, I'm really really proud of all of you. all of you have put in so much effort for this very concert - all the lunch pracs, saturday sectionals etc., so do your very best tomorrow! we've practiced the repertoire so many many million gazillion times, but you only get one change to play the actual thing for the audience, so treasure every single note on your score, even if it's just a long note. keep telling yourself to bring out all the dynamics and articulation, I know you guys can do it, because you've shown me on saturday that it's possible, just that every single player must consciously remember to do so.

please bring bobbypins/ hairband tomorrow to attach the hat to your head. If you are using hairband, pls attach the hat securely to the hairband before audi prac. also, pls try clipping the hat to your head before tmr's prac, find the correct position to place your hat. yup, and all hats should be placed slanted, to the right.

everything has been a mad rush, so I haven't really gotten time to settling down to talk to all of you.

what exactly does this concert mean to you?

is it just another random day,

another random band practice?

this concert, which is exactly 3 days and 1 prac away, is something we have all been working towards. all the lunch pracs, morning pracs, time & effort placed,

is all for these precious <2hours>

it is the day where we, NYCB, will be able to shine as one,

play as one to produce the most memorable music for the audience of 1000.

it is the last time batches 2010, 2011 and 2012 (sec4s, sec3s, sec2s) will be playing on the same stage together, as NYCB 2010. there's only one NYCB 2010, and only one Appassionata XII, so I'm quite sure all of us wants this concert to be a blast, one whereby the audience will go back and post on facebook, on blogger:

"NYCB APPASSIONATA XII WAS AWESOME!"

won't these words make you smile?

with your music, reach out to the audience with our music, touch their hearts, soothe their souls, and make them want to come back for more.

it takes more then playing the correct notes and getting the correct fingerings.

before the audience is able to enjoy the music,

you, as players, must enjoy the music too.

It may seem alot, but as long as you really put your mind into doing it, it's not as difficult as it seems. articulating may be tiring, holding notes to the full value may stretch your diaphragm, but achieving all this will not only make the overall sound nicer, but you'll be able to look back and think "hoho, I actually hold the note for that long!" (it's akin to running, the sense of pride you feel after you forced yourself to run the remaining rounds despite feeling super tired).

Hello clarinets! It's the awesome beishi again. Okay here's the sequence for our publicity piece:

American Beauties bar 1 to 8.
Tijuana Brass bar 4 to 9, 17 to 24.
OUR Bb, D, E. Bb and D play as Forte. E is played as fp.
Flight of the Piasa bar 95 to 102.
Broadway bar 41 to 67, 95 to 98, repeat 95 to 98, then 99 to 108.
American Beauties from K to the end.

Because everyone has different parts so nobody should share scores unless you both of you are in the same part for every song. Yes. Highly doubt it :D So you either use the RACHELLE METHOD: photocopy your scores then cut and paste, or CHARIS METHOD: key in into computer and print (:O) or my LOUSY METHOD: copy your scores on a manuscript paper. Haha. Yay! I want you guys to be ready with this by the next band practice, which is Thursday!

I don't want to nag you all but please please please practice okay. Do it for yourself, do it for nycb, and do it for ms chong because I am sure the whole band put in a lot of effort to do well. So if all of us work hard we will be very good! Try your best and we will be proud of you guys. Sherlyn and I might not have talked about passion or showered you guys with encouragement, but please please know that we really want all of you to do well! So please have faith in nycb, and us, and believe in us no matter what happened/might happen. We swear we will lead you guys with passion and care!

Okay enough of naggy stuff. To help you guys improve on your playing, sherlyn and I decided to give you people tutoring. Yes, so two of us will be situated in the band room during lunch pracs on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you all have any problems and need our help, you can come during lunch prac to ask us. This is for the whole section! Yes, but I doubt that bandroom will be open on the coming monday (vip coming).

And another thing to note! Clarinets, now we have changed our sectionals such that all of us will get a chance to have individual sectionals with mr goh. So we want all of you to be prepared before you come for sectionals. Note down parts that you need mr goh to help, for example some tongueing, running notes ect. Yes and practice beforehand. If you guys don't have anything to ask him he will probably do basics. So if he forgot, please remind him that you have some questions. Note for cme teacher: Be polite also.

That's all, hope you girls didn't die reading this post. Good luck and practise hard! We can do it if we want to alright!

hellooooo!

this blog is so deadd, I shall just update it with our mini section outing :D

yup so today we had a mini section outing, in which only 8 out of 19 people went. ahh wells, it was a bit saddening none of the secones could go with us. anyways, the section got to enjoy tasha's great baking once again before leaving the school :D but sadly cause we were enjoying these muffins, we took close to 45minutes to clean our instruments, and hence had to abandon josephine & rachelle (who could only join us if we were eating near school D: )

so the movie dear john lasted for 2hours. well, esther found it very sad and cried 3 times, while nicole & sherlyn found it rather boring and slept at some parts. hahaha yeah so that's the end of our section outing.

I make it sound so boring hahaha. hopefully you've not been bored out reading this post

for those who didn't hear today,
reminder that auditions will be from 1st april to 9th april (this is not an april fools joke!). any piece we are playing for appa might come out, and no amount of whining will change it. so those who have been, ahem, slacking, better go work on the concert pieces!

oh and just to end off, I shall tell all of you a story!

one fine day, on 11th December 2009, the clarinets section from NYCB decided to go to Bukit Timah Food Centre for their lunch. after consuming their great lunch (and drinking weird-tasting soya bandung and grass jelly), the clarinets set off back to their dear home NYGH by taking bus 174. nearing school, part of the section decided to trick their sectionmate.

'Hey sectionmate, we alight at the bus stop leading to the main gate, then you alight at the bus stop near the side gate ok! then we race each other, see who can reach the band room faster!'

this blur sectionmate however, didn't realise that the side gate was not open! and so at the bus stop, the entire section alighted except for this blur sectionmate, along with two poor other sectionmates who were lost and didn't know what was happening. seeing that 3 of their sectionmates were really not alighting, the remaining of the section started laughingggg non stop! in the end, they spotted the blur sectionmate running from the bus stop at the side gate towards them!

aye ok my story telling skills are quite bad. anyways, huizhen chiaying esther rachelle and I had a good laugh, while poor cherie and xinyun had to run all the way back with the blur sectionmate!

guess who is miss blur sectionmate! ;D

HELLO I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO START TO I USED HELLO. HELLO :D

OKAY SECTION OUTING IS ON THE UMM, 31st DEC AT NICOLE/CHERIE/XINYUN/SHERLYN(?) 'S HOUSE. HEEHEE AND WE'LL BE PLAYING OR DOING RANDOM STUFF WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN CONFIRMED YET BUT MOST PROBABLY WE'LL BE EATING OUR LIVES AWAY OR FLYING KITES (WHICH HZ GAVE ME THE -.- FACE CAUSE SHE SAID THERE'RE TOO MANY BUILDINGS THERE BUT I DON'T SEE WHY NOT, HZ! ANY PLACE IS AS GOOD AS MIRINA BARRAGE!) YOU SEE, WE CAN SWIM WHILE FLYING KITES! THERE WON'T BE BUILDINGS ABOVE THE SWIMMING POOL, WILL THERE? AND IT WILL BE LIKE KILLING TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE! (i forgot the chinese translation for that phrase)

AND AT NIGHT(?NOT CONFIRMED AGAIN), WE MIGHT HAVE A BBQ OR SOME SORT OF THING WHICH INVOLVES ALOT ALOT OF LAUGHING AND SPASMING :DDD PROBABLY SOME SORT OF INDOOR PICNIC I PREDICT.

ANYHOW, DISCUSSIONS ON THIS IMPORTANT EVENT WILL BE CARRIED OUT ASAP ASAP ASAP!!!

FOA is tmr! ahh aren't you excited haha. although the hall is not very exciting, but it's our first official performance together! excitingg eh (;

yup just some miscellaneous stuff to take care of:

BAND UNIFORM & ATTIRE

hello, if you are reading this and haven't packed your band uniform, go do it nowwwww! don't have a heart attack when you come tomorrow and realise that you didn't bring any part of the band u haha. this includes blouse, vest, scarf, skirt, socks and shoes. 6 ITEMS (those without socks, you will only have 5). gogo check that you have all 5 or 6 parts of the band u. ohoh you may also want to bring a hanger so that you can hang and air your band u after tmr's performance.

oh ahem ahem and attention to those without socks (cherie, jinny, josephine, nicole, xinyun, yujun), remember to bring $3.30 exact to pay celine tmr. lastly, please come in school uniform (your best friend the hongzi) tmr, don't come to school in your band u! or else you will scare rachel away on thursday with the smell of your band u ;D

SCORES & STANDS

hmm I think this is already done, but do sort out with your stand partner whose file is going to be brought onto 'stage' tmr for the performance. ohoh and please ensure that all the scores are tucked neatly in your file! or else when you open the file tmr, we might see a score floating to the audience...o.o

PERFORMANCE

during the performance, look look look look at ms chong! even if you can't bear peel your eyes off the score throughout the entire performance, please look at her occasionally to ensure you are on time. yup and ms chong likes to hint with her hands if you need to play louder/ softer at the different passages, so do look up more at ms chong! :D

when not playing, it is highly discouraged to lie your clarinet on your lap. yup so if we have many many many bars of rest, stand your clarinet smartly on your lap. and please do not start hanging your clarinet between your knees! other than that, you need to place your instrument in your mouth at least 2 bars before your entrance.

also, concentrate! don't start daydreaming in the middle of the performance, or start scanning the crowd for familiar faces. count your bars and come in correctly. yup and sit properly during the performance ok! we are all 淑女s hahah. and don't forget to take your cap after the performance(;

MUSIC: Ponyo

for ponyo, the crotchets are suppose to be played long, while the quavers are supposed to be played short and light. yup try to play the quavers with a bounce, such that the sound will be warm and fluffy (I can't seem to find a suitable word heh). also try to make all the articulation sound more pronounced. yup and in case the message didn't manage to be passed around, remember to come down after hitting the long note (I think all of us are playing high Bb) in the last 3rd and 4th bar. lastly, listen out more for the ending, such that we'll be able to play together as one :D

MUSIC: Legend of the Ancient Hero:

for legend, try to bring out more of the change in dynamics. remember to play very loud for bar 20 (oh but try to control and not blast (;), and come down at bar 28. other than that, remember to look at ms chong so as to keep up with her tempo, articulate all the accents, and tongue your entrance

yup that's about it! and most importantly, enjoy yourselves! don't feel stressed or nervous during the performance. be confident of yourself, count and come in. be sure of yourself, don't wait for your partmates to come in before you come in (;

all of us have spent much time and effort preparing for this very performance. I think that we have definitely improved alot since EOYs ended, so just go up there and show the audience the platinum NYCB that we are! don't see the notes as scary notes with weird accidentals popping up here and there, but see them as music. flow with the music, and enjoy yourself! it's only when you enjoy yourself, that you'll be able to produce the best sound :D

yup and ms lee beishi sends her heart (along with all her love) from shanghai to all of you! haha yup so jiayou for tomorrow! let's give our very best for ms chong, mr goh, for beishi who's in shanghai, as well as for all our sec fours who will be scattered among the audience!

hellohello!

in an attempt to keep this blog alive, I shall post about today, when the record was set of the clarinets section having the least number of people at band!

During fall in, there were...

2 Sec 3s (Huizhen & Sherlyn)
1 Sec 2 (Esther) and
2 Sec 1s (Cherie & Josephine)

...5 people ):

We were lonely people indeed, and due to auditions, there were only 2 people having sectionals with Mr Goh...

...which soon grew to 7 people (Cherie, Josephine, Esther, Beishi, Charis, Huizhen, Sherlyn) by 11am! (haha sec3s full attendance! :D)

and the number dropped to 6 once again when main band started cause beishi had lessons. and it further dropped back to 5 when josephine left early for lessons. and it bounced back to 6 when beishi returned!

so today was a sad sad day indeed, with only 4 Sec3s, 1 Sec2 and 2 Sec1s ):

ohohoh! I bet everyone is wondering why beishi's name has two stars behind it! Ok actually it's bad news. For global classroom programme right, beishi got into the Shanghai 6 weeks programme, so she will be going away for 6 weeks, and leaving around EOY period. So it means she will not be playing for FOA, so thirds must jiayou! (;

3. Band Outing
a) Money
For those who are going for band outing and have very bad memory (like me), pls take note of the following:

b) Invitations
All those who lost their invitations for band outing (ahem) or didn't receive them last time, pls tell me by Sunday (;

c) Arrival Place
For those going to East Coast Park by themselves on band outing day (not meeting the band @ Bedok MRT), remember to inform huizhen

d) LUNCH!
For band outing, dinner will be provided but lunch will not be. yup so we will need to decide what to have for lunch -- either bring food from home to have a romantic picnic by the sea, or eat @ the food stalls in ECP (Macs, Subway etc.)

4. Instruments
For the instruments right, charis & all the sec2s (esther, tasha, jinny, rachelle & yujun) will be changing from the current EC clarinet to the RC clarinets (the black case one) For convenience, the sec4's instruments have randomly been assigned:

For those who went for band camp last year, I hope you remember one fine night when we were watching the Limelight video recordings. oh for those who didn't go, yeah we did watch :D

...and now is your chance to get your hands on this wonderful recording! (sounds like some advertisement haha) for those who want a copy of the Limelight video recordings (includes audio and visual, the current CD all of you have only has the audio part), pls tell me latest by Saturday (;

Oh if you have the following DVD and will like me to use it to burn the recording for you in that DVD instead of the ones being purchased, pls tell me latest by Saturday also, and pass the DVD to me by next wednesday. the DVD you are passing to me (if you are) MUST be of SONY brand, is of DVD format and rewritable. the DVD must be able to hold recordings of up to 120min and 4.7GB. this is because the videos most likely cannot be burnt into other brands of DVDs/ CDs.

If you do not tell me that you are passing me any DVD, I will assume that you are ok with the ones being purchased (; yup, each DVD costs $0.60. oh and for those of you who wants a plastic casing for the DVD, it will cost an extra $0.60.

Mr Lee and Ms Chong were mentioned in August's Band Fusion newsletter yay :D

Were there notable people in the past that you would like to mention?

The first person I want to mention is Mr Lee Seck Chiang. We all started out together. We all were school principals. Mr Lee started the Crescent Girls School Band, which was well known in the past for a very fine brass sound. Mr Lee was dedicated and knowledgeable, and he has great pedagogy skills to motivate the girls. Crescent Girls School was then famous because of the band. Now, Mr Lee has retired but he still goes back to Crescent Girls to help the band. He has trained many good musicians such as Adeline Teo, Samantha Chong, Chua Sock Hwa and Dixie De Souza.

hello clarinets ;)

it's been a long journey, hasn't it? and we've all worked extremely hard. give syf our best shot tmr..but always bear in mind - we are musicians, we are bandees, we are performers. not competitors. most of us joined band because we have a passion for music. let that passion live on in our hearts tmr while playing national anthem, when in the audi for our last prac, when we're at SCH tuning up, when we're on the stage playing, when we hear the results, when we get back to school - the passion lives on.

hello clarinets!

friday was cool ;) and whoohoo our section is so you3 mo4 qi4!! all never bring file together haha ;) model section we memorise scores yay! (actually maybe is lazy, but well at least it was uncoordinated laziness :D)

haha ok. everyone gets 2 new reeds. went to accent and bought V12 3 1/2 reeds, bass clarinet 3 and 3 1/2 reeds. yup so there should be enough for everyone to take 2 more reeds (regardless of whether you have taken already this month). syf mah, got special reed priviliges ;) hehe. but after this syf, no more already haha then it's back to the 2 reeds per month thing.

self-service take reeds ok. 2 only ah! no cheating hahah. (remember to write in the reed book!) and please take on monday if possible, because mr goh offered to help us with our reed checking. so tuesday and thursday he'll check for us one by one, help you shave reed etc. we have such a nice tutor! so please take your 2 new reeds and start choosing your syf reed and backup reeds haha if you haven't already done so.

rights. I CUT MY HAIR TODAY HAHA! hair check on tuesday ah everyone! hahaha..

yup, reminder.. monday report at 2.30pm, wednesday report at 2.15pm. tues and thurs normal timing. and friday......... youknowwhat. -drama music plays in background-

ahh yes, everyone please ask your lovely parents if they can kindly cook spaghetti for us ;) haha..we may change it to every section settle your own food. (may only) so in this case we have like 14 people, need 1 or 2 people to cook. but anyway the more the merrier ;) not forgetting MILO too!

Mouthpiece and Reeds Care:

- Do not swab through mouthpiece; just use the cloth part of the swab to gently ca1 the insides. note the key word - gently. like how tabby does it.

- Wash your mouthpiece with water (not hot water!) to get rid of debri/dirt inside (will hinder sound and airflow) if possible, use a small brush to gently (once again the key word) brush the insides. Don't wash the mouthpiece too often.. maybe once or twice per month?

- Wash your reeds (not hot water!) gently (once again the key word) to get rid of debri/dirt. and also acid from saliva heh. acid = corrode reed. (i'm not making this up!)

- For emergency use, if you desperately need to use a new reed, soak in warm water and it'll work well. but it will work well only for that performance. throw away reed after, cos it'll be spoilt haha. BUT hmm i don't think we will bring like a flask of warm water to syf, haha. anyway all of us have backup reeds. so this point is just a funfact ;)

yup everyone please remember that we have auditors coming after syf. so sign in and out your clarinets!

There are the high notes of days full of worthwhile risks. Then there are squeaks where everything seems to fall apart in your face. There are stunning crescendos and monotonous mezzo pianos. Major, good days; minor, bad days. A complex system of keys and holes to cover. So many choices due to alternate fingerings; some are better than others. The soft, calm days of the chalumeau register. Some days you're in tune, some days you sound like a dead goose. Yes, life is like a clarinet. It'll always turn out right in the end, just like the beautiful final note in a Carnegie Hall solo.

The Philharmonic Winds Presents -- Black Pipes, in Clarinet Classics

In this special concert, clarinettist Liang Jiayi will perform Dance Preludes by Witold Lutoslawski, and Desmond Chow will be performing the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano F minor Op. 120 No. 1 by Johannes Brahms. They will be accompanied by Dr Zechariah Goh Toh Chai on piano.

Random ugly design for section tee. :) It was conveniently doodled during chinese lecture and the photo was taken with my lousy phone camera under horrible lighting. So if y'all think the design's okay / want the design I'll prolly draw a nicer one with better proportions (it's kinda supposed to be 'I love nycb' with the clarinet as 'I') and scan it in or smth. Will check out tee suppliers soon sorry I keep forgetting to go!! :S

hello! this is sandy! yay i was trying to connect my phone to the computer.. but dunno why it just didnt appear in "my computer"! haha then after 5min plus i was searching for the memory stick cover, an alternative way to connect.. then accidentally pulled the wire that was connected to my phone still and my phone fell to the carpet.. and suddenly there was this sound.. like new device found! then yea it appeared suddenly(: so yay transfered the image over and edited the '07 to '09(:

thanks for today's 团圆饭!! hahah..it was great! and of course the sportsy stuff we did before that heee..

anyway anyway, we were having a discussion about section tee!! ching-a-ling-a-ling will go scout for supplier etc. soon.. in the meanwhile, please send in your designs :] wait. don't send, put it up here! sandy has one and rachelle also designed.. yup yup post them? and any more are also welcome :]
